Staphylinid beetles are a substantial part of the predatory arthropod fauna of arable land and forests. They are considered to be important natural enemies of other soil arthropods as Collembola. Some smaller species (e.g. species of the subfamily Aleocharinae) presumably partly feed on soil fungi.

I identify adult specimens on species level, except the subfamily Aleocharinae.

A typical species in pitfall traps is Ocypus olens.
